Multiple Intelligences Action Research

Appendix D

American schools have traditionally favored those students who excel in the linguistic and analytical arenas because these skills are highly valued in our culture. Unfortunately, this traditional approach leaves certain students behind to stumble blindly through an educational system that ignores their unique abilities. This action research study seeks to show that instructional activities that incorporate the multiple intelligences can improve students' attitudes toward learning and students' academic achievement in English class.

Example of a Student Composition Rated in the High Category

The title “In the Metro” is a place where I’m sure people meet many other people, and may even take a liking to them. In every person’s life, there is that one person who got away or the person you see from afar. You see that person and you wish you could get to know him or her or even just a name.

When it says “the escalator carried her away just as a river – a flower to the sea,” that kind of makes a reference to maybe a life with her that he could have had, was so slowly and gracefully swifted away. “A flower to the sea” could also be making reference to her beauty. When it says “she goes her way and I go mine…and yet I’m sad,” he is sad because he knows that he wouldn’t probably ever see her again.

Towards the end, when he says “crucified to family duties, stood, transfixed,” he is talking about that he could never be with her because, he is married and he knows that having an affair is the wrong thing to do, and he must be loyal to his wife and if he has them his children too.
