Research Project: The Roaring Twenties

(or What is The Great Gatsby All About Anyway?)

Assignment Description & Purpose

This mini-research project is designed to introduce students to the era that serves as the backdrop for F. Scott Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby. The project can also be adapted to other 20s era literature.

This project is a great way to incorporate the multiple intelligences into the classroom. In the past, my students have used a wide variety of intelligences and have created amazing projects.

I give students the opportunity to work alone, in pairs, or in groups of three or four. Each student is required to select his or her own topic to research. If students choose to work with classmates, their individual research is to be integrated into one presentation. As preparation for their projects, students brainstorm methods for demonstrating knowledge. The form of the final product is left to the students' discretion. As a result, students could use the combinations of intelligences with which they are most comfortable.

Original Use & Adaptability

This lesson plan was originally designed for use in a classroom setting consisting of approximately 27 to 29 students; however, the assignment can easily be adapted for smaller classrooms and for home school use.

Enrichment & Home School Use

As mentioned above, this assignment can be completed independently or in small groups.

Make use of local resources to supplement the activity. Research does not have to be limited to books and the Internet. Students can conduct interviews and visit museums or historical societies.
