Teacher Resources
Teaching is
one of the most rewarding
occupations one can choose. It is also one of the most difficult - and
the level of difficulty increases each year. To make the teacher's job
a bit easier, The Writing Tutor offers a variety of teacher resources
designed to help teachers meet the needs of an increasingly diverse
population of students. Teacher resources include: English/language
arts lesson plans & writing assignments, interdisciplinary lesson
plans & writing assignments, printable handouts, writing promotion,
reading promotion, word games, reference tools, enrichment or
remediation courses, and teacher links.
Lesson plans and
writing assignments are free to use for educational purposes, but the
copyright information in the footnote of each page must remain intact.

a lesson plan or a writing assignment to The Writing Tutor.
In an attempt to
emphasize
the
importance of writing across the curriculum and to stress the
importance of maintaining high writing standards outside of the English
or language arts classroom, The Writing Tutor would like to promote
interdisciplinary writing by sharing lesson plans & writing
assignments. If you have a lesson plan or a writing assignment
that
fits this description, please submit it.
Lesson plans and writing assignments are free to use for educational

The same quick reference
grammar
and literature guides available to students online are also available
in printable formats that can easily be photocopied and distributed to
students. These are free to use for educational purposes, but the
copyright information in the footnote of each page must remain intact.
Also see the handouts
listed after lesson plan descriptions.
The Writing Tutor currently
offers
feeds from three sections of The New York Times and two sections of USA
Today as well as feeds from Education Today and the Plagiarism Resource
Site. Teachers can research the newest information about the field of
education, while teachers and students alike can gather current
information about national and world news, as well as news relating to
science and the arts.
The Writing Tutor makes it
easier
for teachers to promote writing by sponsoring several writing contests
each year. Teachers can make the contest a class project or an
enrichment opportunity for interested students. Teachers can use The
Young Authors Writing Contest flyer
to get the word out about the contest. Individual contest entries are
only accepted online, but teachers who choose to enter two or more
students in the contest can mail contest entries in one envelope using
one contest
entry form
per entry. Since The Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA)
requires that children 13 years of age or younger obtain parental
permission before submitting personal information online, parents of
children under 13 years of age must also sign the entry form. It is
recommended that both parents and teachers read The
Writing Tutor Privacy Policy
before submitting a contest entry. (Note: The Writing Tutor also
strongly suggests that all students under the age of 18 obtain parental
approval before submitting personal information to anyone, online or
otherwise.)

NEW! The Writing Tutor has recently launched
a new virtual book club. We will discuss classic and contemporary
literature in a variety of genre. Join us for a discussion! (Note:
Parents/teachers should monitor students' reading selections and their
participation in book discussions for reading ability and content
appropriateness.)
The strategy behind Hangman
requires that students understand how words work. The Writing Tutor's
word list is rich in suffixes and prefixes to help students learn to
separate root words from their prefixes and suffixes.
Word searches can be a fun way of working with vocabulary lists. Try
some of The Writing Tutor's printable word searches, or email
your comma-separated word lists in a .txt file and we will post your
list as a printable word search. Make sure that you provide a title for
the word search (i.e. Catcher in the Rye chap. 1-4, Spring, Soccer,
etc.). Please type "word search word list" in the subject line of your
email.
This section contains
writing and
reference links, links for parents and teachers, and also contains
searchable reference tools all in one place!!
The Writing Tutor courses
provide
remediation and/or enrichment for students who have fallen behind or
who are ahead of the class. Teachers can use a course in the classroom
or suggest a course to students/parents who would benefit. (Use the
email a friend button at the top of the page!)
Teacher Tips & Talk
Participate in online
discussions
about anything that classroom teachers face from time management to
lesson planning. Discussions take place in a bulletin board format. This feature has
been temporarily discontinued.
